How to wash, dry and store your throw according to its material, so that it remains soft and keeps its colour. One rule comes before all others: the label sewn on your throw is authentic.

Six rules valid for all throws

    info

    Read the label first

It indicatesthe temperature and drying intended for your model. If it differs from this guide, the label is right.

    mode_heat

    30 °C, delicate programme

Hot water can felt wool, flatten fleece and dull colours. A short, gentle cycle is enough.

    close

    Pas d’adoucissant

It leaves a film on the fibers: the throw becomes less soft and less lofty. A mild liquid detergent, in small quantities, works best.

    air

    Air drying

Flat or on a drying rack, away from a radiator and direct sunlight. Drying hot clothes damages synthetic fibers and causes natural fibers to shrink.

    checkroom

    Lavez-le seul

Or with laundry of a similar colour, without jeans or zippers: it is friction that creates pilling.

    eco

    Air out between two washes

Shake then hang for an hour near a window, a throw refreshes without putting it in the machine. The less it is washed, the longer it lasts.

Drying. Flat, in the open air.

After drying. Run a soft brush in the direction of the hair to restore its appearance.

Avoid. The dryer, iron and strong spin, which tangle the hair.

Washing. Machine washable at 30°C. For a fringed model, slip it into a washing net: they will not get tangled.

Drying. In the open air. Stretch it by hand while it is damp to restore its shape.

    Avoid. High temperatures: cotton shrinks.

    Knit and chunky knit throw

    keyboard_arrow_down
    add remove

Wash. In a washing net, delicate programme at 30°C, gentle spin.

Drying. Lay flat on a towel. Hanging wet, it deforms under its own weight.

A pulled wire. Don't cut it. Iron it inside out using a needle or hook.

Avoid. Objects that catch: jewelry, closures, claws.

    Wool throw

    keyboard_arrow_down
    add remove

Wash. Rarely. By hand in cold water or on the wool programme, with a special wool detergent.

Drying. Flat, without twisting, away from any heat source.

Between two washes. Air it out: the wool refreshes in the air, and the smell of new wool fades in a few days.

Avoid. Hot water, tumble dryer and strong spin: wool feels and shrinks.

    Heated throw

    keyboard_arrow_down
    add remove

First of all. Unplug it and refer to the instructions provided with your model: this alone indicates whether it is washable, and how.

If the instructions allow washing. Remove the removable control, wash at low temperature, without strong spin.

Drying. Flat, in the open air. Never plug it in to dry and wait until it is completely dry before plugging it in again.

Avoid. Iron, dry clean and fold tightly.

    Pills, hairs and pulled threads

Pills appear where the fabric rubs. This is common on soft materials, especially in the first few weeks, and it does not mean that the throw is damaged.

    • To remove them: an anti-pilling razor or a wool comb, throw laid flat, without pressing.
    • To limit them: wash inside out, alone, without fabric softener.
    • Pet hair: adhesive roller or damp rubber glove before washing.

    A stain?Good reflexes

    1. Act quickly. A fresh stain almost always comes off, a dried stain much less so.
    2. Dab, do not rub. With a clean cloth, from the outside to the centre.
    3. Cold water and mild soap. First test on an inconspicuous corner.
    4. Rinse by blotting then let dry in the open air.

    Le ranger hors saison

    • Clean and completely dry : Trapped moisture leaves an odor.
    • Folded, not hanging , especially for knitwear and wool.
    • In a fabric cover rather than a closed plastic bag: the fibers must breathe.
    • Dry and protected from light , which dulls colours.
    • For wool : a sachet of lavender or a piece of cedar keeps moths away.

    Frequently asked questions

How often to wash a throw?

    keyboard_arrow_down
    add remove

Two to three washes per season are enough for a sofa throw, more if it is used for children or animals. In the meantime, shake it and air it.

Can I put my throw in the dryer?

    keyboard_arrow_down
    add remove

Only if the label allows it, and at low temperatures. When in doubt, air dry it.

My throw is less soft than at the start, what should I do?

    keyboard_arrow_down
    add remove

The most common cause is fabric softener or too much detergent. Rewash it at 30°C without fabric softener, with little detergent, then shake it dry.

My wool throw smells like wool, is this normal?

    keyboard_arrow_down
    add remove

Yes: it is the natural smell of the fiber. It fades by airing the throw for a few days.

I no longer have the label, what should I do?
